EASA warns airlines of risks of flying over Iran in new Conflict Zone bulletin

In response to the escalation of conflicts in the Middle East involving Israel and Iran, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued a Conflict Zone Bulletin (CZIB) on October 2, 2024. The document warns aircraft operators to avoid Iranian airspace.

“In view of the Iranian attack on Israel on 1 October 2024, and Israel’s announcement of its intention to retaliate, the European Commission and EASA have decided to issue a CZIB recommending that operators not conduct flights in Iranian airspace at all flight levels.”, EASA said at CZIB.

Given concerns about the potential risks of an escalation of violence in the Middle East, EASA wants to restrict flights over Iranian airspace until 31 October 2024 to protect operators and engers.

The European regulator said it will continue to closely monitor the situation to assess changes in the risks to EU aircraft operators due to the evolving threat. The recommendation applies to operators subject to Regulation (EU) 965/2012 and to third-country operators authorised by EASA operating under TCO authorisation in the EU.

A Rosaviatsia, Russia's air transport regulator, also outlined periods during which it suggests that carriers not operate flights to Israel, Lebanon and Iran.
